Emacs Speaks Statistics: One Interface - Many Programs
******************************************************

Emacs Speaks Statistics (ESS) is a user interface for developing
statistical applications and performing data analysis using any of
several powerful statistical programming languages: currently, S,
S-Plus, R, SAS, XLispStat, Stata. ESS provides a common editing
environment, tailored to the grammar of each statistical language, and
similar execution environments, in which the statistical program is run
under the control of Emacs. The paper discusses the capabilities and
advantages of using ESS as the primary interface for statistical
programming, and the design issues addressed in providing a common
interface for differently structured languages on different
computational platforms.
